First MP Ganieve Kaur Majithia, elected from Majitha’s Shiromani Akali Dal list, aims to pursue development projects left unfinished by the old Congress regime in her constituency.

Ganieve replaced her husband Bikram Singh Majithia as the candidate after the top Akali leader opted to run from Amritsar East against former Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu.

From a housewife, Ganieve deftly rose to the challenge of a political plunge and recorded an impressive victory. A mother of two, she says her husband had ensured that all basic amenities and quality facilities were available for the people of Majitha. “Yet there are several things that stopped under the previous regime. Unemployment has hit a new high and young people in Majitha should get their fair share in case the government launches a mega recruitment drive,” she says.

A graduate of Jesus and Mary College, University of Delhi, Ganieve says her main area of interest would be women’s empowerment. She says she would also work to increase farmers’ incomes, as the majority of people in her constituency were in agriculture.
