Mumbai Police Form Women’s Safety Nirbhaya Squad Days After Sakinaka Rape

Mumbai police announced the formation of the “Nirbhaya Squad” for Women’s Safety on Tuesday, days after a young woman was raped, brutalized with a rod and later died on the outskirts of Sakinaka.

As part of the “Nirbhaya Squad”, a security cell for women will be set up in each police station. The team will consist of a female PSI or ASI rank officer, a female and a male.

Mumbai Police said the regional division’s additional police commissioner should call a team meeting the first week of every month to review the safety of the women.

The development came amid questions about security in the state. In addition to being raped, the victim was assaulted with an iron bar in her private parts at a steady rate in the suburb of Sakinaka and lost a lot of blood. She was also stabbed with a knife, police said.

The crime, which resembled Delhi’s 2012 “Nirbhaya” gang rape case, took place in the wee hours of the morning. The suspect, arrested hours after the incident, was subsequently charged with murder.
