Self-immolation and gang rape highlight women’s safety in Mathura-Agra region ahead of UP polls

The safety of women in Uttar Pradesh could become an issue hampering the campaign for the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the legislative elections which begin next month.

While a woman Mathura died at SN Medical College after setting herself on fire at Raya police station after her indecent assault complaint against a village pradhan was not registered, a Block Pramukh belonging to the BJP in Agra’s Bah was arrested for allegedly gang-raping a woman from Khurja.

A senior police officer told India Today Mathura’s wife was allegedly assaulted by the village pradhan identified as Harichand and a few others. The FIR has now been deposited at the Raya police station in Mathura. On January 1, a panchayat was held in the village where Harichand tried to pressure the woman to withdraw her complaint. She refused to do so.

The accused allegedly harassed her to the point that she set herself on fire in front of the police station during the “Samadhan Diwas” event. She was taken to hospital where she succumbed to burns during treatment. Police registered an FIR against Harichand and four others in this case.

In the other case reported on Monday, police in Agra arrested two people, including Bah Block Pramukh Lal Singh of the BJP, in connection with the rape of a woman at a hotel in the Tajganj area. The woman filed a gang rape complaint against them. The police were questioning the accused at the time of filing this report.

The woman, a resident of Khurja, called the police at 11 p.m. to report a rape. She told police she had spoken to Lal Singh from the Bah region for three months.

The accused allegedly called her on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Tajganj region. After talking to her for a while in the car, the accused took her to a hotel. There he met another of his friends. The two then allegedly raped the girl at the hotel. They dumped her on the nearby road and fled.

Police registered a case and arrested Lal Singh, a resident of Bah’s Faraira, and other defendants identified as Yatendra for gang rape. Lal Singh is the Block Pramukh of Bah. SSP Sudhir Kumar Singh said police questioned the accused to corroborate the complainant’s version.

In response to these incidents, Agra Congress leader Devendra Singh Chillu said Congress Secretary General Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had focused the party’s election campaign on the well-being and empowerment of women.

“The failure of the Yogi government to protect the women of Uttar Pradesh from its own rulers is precisely why the state now demands that Congress be in power. When Congress takes power, its priority will be to create a safe environment in Uttar Pradesh so that women can work and travel without fear, ”said Devendra Singh Chillu.
