On July 29, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) targeted the Center on the issue of women’s safety, citing the case of a Gujarat BJP MP who allegedly raped a woman, a day after the BJP accused the Congress of hurling a “deliberate sexist insult” at President Draupadi Murmu.
Both houses of parliament were adjourned on Friday amid outcry over Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s “rashtrapatni” remark.
“Dear PM @narendramodi and @AmitShah. I look forward to seeing you both on Monday morning #ParliamentMonsoonSession. Since you are always so eager to raise the issues of Oppn disrespecting #women, we will all be waiting. 11am Monday. See you. PS If 56″ can’t come send #2,” tweeted TMC RS MP Derek O’Brien.
He also attached a report on police investigating allegations of rape and illegal detention of a woman against Gujarat Rural Development Minister and BJP MP Mahemdavad Arjunsinh Chauhan.
The TMC, in its official Twitter account, also raised the issue of women’s safety by referring to the same allegations.
“BJP Cabinet Minister and MP @iarjunsinhbjp from Gujarat allegedly RAPED and ILLEGALLY CONFINED a woman. Prime Minister @narendramodi, where are your big claims to successfully keep women safe now? This is happening in your home! #ShameOnBJP “, he tweeted. .
A major political row erupted on Thursday over Mr Chowdhury’s ‘rashtrapatni’ remark, with the BJP launching an all-out offensive against the opposition party, accusing Mr Chowdhury of launching a ‘deliberate sexist insult’ at President Murmu and demanding an apology from Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.
In his defence, Mr Chowdhury, who is the Congress leader at Lok Sabha, said he never intended to disrespect the president and that his ‘rashtrapatni’ remark was a ‘slip slip’.
