Hyderabad: Adventurous men who are prone to groping women are literally shocked if the woman wears a particular type of coat aptly named ‘Abhaya’. The coat, developed by three Hyderabad-based BTech graduates, including a designer, not only sends an electric shock into the miscreant’s hands, but also triggers a host of other security measures. And it keeps the woman who wears it warm and comfortable!

In case a woman wearing the ‘Abhaya’ cloak faces such a situation, all she needs to do is press a few buttons that activate a gadget to send a mild electric shock, send SMS alerts to five registered registered contacts by the user in a special mobile application and save the GPS position. It doesn’t stop there, it also sounds a piercing alarm and makes an SOS call to the nearest police station, sharing the location using GPS, said R Shashank Reddy, one of the three partners . Telangana today.

“Even if the victim forgets or fails to press the buttons in such situations, the friction or intensity during any fight is enough to activate the safety measures,” he said.
The prototype for the coat was unveiled by MLC K Kavitha here on Friday. Priced at around Rs 3,500 per piece, these coats are made of denim and bohemian fabric and are fitted with emergency buttons on the left and right sides.

Congratulating the three graduates, Kavitha said Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao gives top priority to women’s safety. “The Telangana government has introduced She Teams and is taking tough action against people who misbehave or harass women,” she said.
